Brilliant Little Birdies – the beginning of a collection

Brilliant Birdies

Brilliant Birdies

here are my ‘morning’ sketches from this week. I was trying to NOT be symmetrical & I think I achieved that . It’s making me a little uncomfortable – but that’s the entire point – to stretch your ideas.  I find them silly – and whimsical. I am always going for whimsical and I am pretty sure no one ever was chastised for silly – they are definitely ‘raw’ at best.

Usually i will not share my sketches because they stink. But as part of the goals that I have set for myself, artistically, over the next few months I would like to try to discover some grounds for collections. Those of you who currently license work know why this is vital- I am having a problem sticking to one idea long enough to complete the collection. ADD.  This time, I am taking a different course, after the sketches, they are getting scanned an given potential placement in a series, with a name. I figure that like the children or the cat we adopted, once they have a name, we can’t give ’em up – so they will need tending too and that means COMPLETION !

I have hundreds if not thousands of ideas like this. fish, birds, raccoons, lighthouses, starfish, sea shells – you name it – it will be interesting to see if this tactic/plan works.

Hope you are having a fabulous weekend !

The month of Gratefulness….

I am a haphazard blogger – and honestly, I wish I had enough important thoughts to blog daily – this month is whizzing by and in a very, very short time we will be sitting down to that huge family gathering to remind ourselves of what is important – family and friends.

One of the things that I am most grateful for is creativity. Some think is just pure luck of the draw,  some believe it to be genetic, others the result of concentrated efforts and practice – but however it has arrived – every year I am more thankful for this ability to think, grow and create. I am also secretly hoping that this single reflection has me covered for all 30 days of the unforgiving daily gratefulness requirement that each November presents to us – because my haphazard blogging techniques are certainly not in line with that task.

The other cool thing about november is Whimsical Women. If you are in or near Winston Salem, NC you MUST run to this event. It is truly amazing. I have been painting up a storm – a snow storm – so here are the 2013 “Men of Snow”.  Simple, colorful & happy. For those of you that I have known for a long time, this is an annual painting event – and they are different each year – this one is just simple (which my “one word” for 2013).

PS. In editing this I have determined that the Green Man of Snow is probably fro-magnum. Peace.

Commissioning, the Opinionator and Evoking Emotion

Commissioning: For this, I am so thankful. I love creating the art that people have said “I need that – but would you please do this….”. It makes me feel connected to the collectors and very happy that my work speaks to them.

However, I hear a lot of people openly ‘criticize’ my subject matter – ‘It’s not useable’, “it’s weird” or “it’s not Fine Art”. Um…ok. Truly,  I don’t care that they voice their opinions as they are absolutely entitled to the thoughts and their reactions to what they see. It’s not hurtful, its just part of the gig.  It will however, not change my style. you either love or you do not. It’s okay…

I was told earlier this week that I am not ‘artist’ like – I find this funny. What exactly is ‘artist-like’. I am fortunate to have both an acumen for the practical business side and the whimsical creative side- two brained if you will. I am truly blessed (this is a “southern-nice” word for fortunate) to have such ability. This ‘agent’ was trying to land me into her $750 program. I asked for details of the program, but was more interested in seeking a licensing agent for some of the more reproducible works. She asked for my portfolio – I gave her the private link. She then picked out the three pieces of about 300 that were similar to other licensed works. One being angels. I make angels. They do not have faces. I can’t create a face that speaks to the sweetness that the collages evoke. She said this was too much like Kelly Rae Roberts. I am truly flattered by the comparison, but alas, they are not even close.

They are done, one at a time, based on the client providing me with a palette and some materials. They are often HIGHLY personal – containing items such as a letter from a deceased family member, tickets from an event, you get the drift.  They are not meant for ‘mass destruction’ (reproduction, licensing, cards)  they are meant to hang in your home, to provide comfort for a lost loved one and as a ‘guardian’ to a child or other important person or event in your life.

I really think she missed the entire point of ART – evoking emotion – I try to stick with the happy art for happy people theme, but sometimes we need to look beyond that – love, memories and comfort as important parts of life. I will not be using this agent nor will I be taking her $750 class that tells you to put your artwork on mock-ups. I already know that.  🙂

Grandma D

Grandma D

This personal Angelwork was done as a sample. 16 x 20, it contains a hand written letter from my grandmother (congratulating us on our marriage) , A map page from a trip that we took, a bunch of tiny snowflakes to remind us of our skiing adventures (dates) and a heart to represent our love for one another…. Obviously, no face could express these memories….

Crabby Amigos

So it’s friday the men are on a fishing trip at the beach so there is a little more time for getting Ready for Saturday’s big event at the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival in N. Wilkesboro, NC. Where is that you ask? Literally in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  While fall has not quite arrived here – mornings are crisp at around 64 degrees, the days are high 70s to 80s. It is a great time of year for an event like this !

I also found out yesterday that pretty soon I will need to decide on a ‘new name’ for myself – kinda like mom, mommy or mother – but a little grander…. more on that another day.

Because of all this excitement, I didn’t manage to get to bed until 11:30 – late pour moi… and so I painted these three little men.  LIke a lot of things that i do, i hated it for the first 15 minutes. What was I thinking ? Green on Orange and the shapes were way off… but this morning, I ADORE them.

I hope your weekend is as wonderful as I believe mine will be – looking forward to exhibiting.

Beach Life

I just can’t get the sea off my mind – when I was young we went to Maine a lot . Recently a couple of my college buddies did a mini tour of New England (maybe more like New England Pubs) and posted pictures of the coast in RI – I couldn’t go due to kids activities – but I did manage to squeeze in a painting – (and a couple of cocktails) so I was almost there.

Silly Flowers

So today’s little work is just silly flowers. I read this interesting book called “Paint Lab” last night. I was expecting fun similiar to the “Drawing Lab” book, but instead found some art history and serious ‘work’ involved. It is a good book – just too serious pour moi.

You know me, happy art for happy people.

But I was inspired by a lesson, so to remove the serious I drew these little guys – each have a different petal.  They are on drawn with black ink on a very busy background. In fact, it is so busy that you can barely see the works. Original “sketch” attached so you get the idea….

Have an art filled day !

Whimsyville meets Gelli

It goes without saying that this Gelli Printing thing is addictive – in fact, if you want, you can get a badge for your blog that says you are an addict. (Um, I will not be getting the badge because that would imply that I have an ‘art issue’ and perhaps could lead to a 12 step program in which I would no longer purchase art toys… so, no.)

Anywho – in these prints I see Whimsyville Villages – so without further ado (except that they will get more layers and be reposted in the future) here are three experiments…
