the test of ‘realness’

So this week i finished a 24 x 24 commission that was sort of rendered by my appearance at the Carolina Beach Arts Festival. A Pelican Collage. Have you seen it before ? yes. Thing is it was for someone that I have to see on a daily basis and it was ‘scary’. He insisted on a substrate I was not sure would work – paper / cardboard. He didn’t want to hear a thing about canvas panels, birch wood substrates or anything that me, the artist, thought would be prudent….

In an effort to appease the client and in a ‘oh what the heck-throw caution to the wind- whatever’  mind set  i did as he asked. Guess what?

It’s fine. He even gave me a ‘tip’ for doing it his way – $ 50.00 –

Moral of the story : Try it – it may get you something in addition to a happy client.

some.some.some.summer

So the ‘official’ start of summer was eons ago the unofficial mark is today, the 4th of July. We had our first hurricane, ART. appropriate.

.

A lighthouse seems like the perfect ART piece to celebrate summer. I will be painting some big dogs today, and just finished a really romantic commission from groom to bride, but will wait until after the wedding to share that one – surprises are important !

So enjoy your day and your summer season – we have already vacationed and have some things to attend to – freshman orientation at Virginia Tech, summer soccer training, and maybe some just plain laying by the pool.

Back to the regularly scheduled Sea Art

I am so drawn to the sea. Perhaps it is because I was born in March as a Pisces (although I am not too ‘into’ the whole astrological thingy ma bob), perhaps it was my grandfathers work with boats and taking us out or that we went to the beach for vacation. Whatever it is, it is me.  We will go this year in a few weeks. I will come home with more ideas, but for now – here are some recent paintings ;

When life gives you sleet – make SUMMER ART. There is little you can do about Mother Nature – except maybe alter her works of art a little to create a new work of art.

Anyone who is experiencing the remnants of winter has just had it. My friend Dave pleaded with MN to stop her snow fall – nicely even. My cousin Elizabeth has her two boys morphing the snow man into monstrous, bloody dudes – just how many sweet snow people can you make until you have to start interjecting your own ideas – this is truly a sign that enough, my dear mother nature, is enough.

If you see Al Gore today ask him why the Great Lakes are roughly 80% solid ice – probably because of global warming. Right……

I just heard, while writing this post, a tree fall in the woods. I am not in the woods, but for those that have pondered this question about the tree making noise all you life… i will just say that It Does.

Love your day, make some colorful art and for-get-ta-bout the weather. – Ann

The best is yet to come…

I truly believe this – especially where art is concerned. I don’t really distinguish between last year and this year by ‘marking it’ with a number – it is all part of the same life and I don’t feel a need to ‘clean slate it’ every 365 days. To me it is like saying good or bad, that everything that came before is unimportant and that is Not true. You need the good and the bad to get the BEST  🙂 You are the summation of all of the days.

When an artist seeks to grow – its really important to look backwards.

I make art every day – some good some not so good and there are many times when I look at something and say ‘I could do this for the rest of my life’ – this is evidenced in the past by the number of “FreshFish”, “Beach works” and “Petworks” that I have posted. There are hundreds more in each of those themes that are not posted and or sold.

For 2013 it will be this:

Mans Best Friend

Mans Best Friend

On a whim – and I know ya’ll are tired of seeing the damn dog portraits- but this was done sitting in front of the TV on a lap board with a water brush. I had just finished reading something somewhere on the inter-webs and the thought about painting the light and shadows in contrasting colors (orange and red here) popped into my head. I am sure some one taught this to me at some point in the past 50 years, but that single ‘ding’ has grown into a least one or two commissions a week. It’s funny how, in not even trying, the results are WAY better than anything other form I have slaved over. The Fish and the Beach Huts were the same way. Maybe its a ‘calling’ of sorts?

Heres to your ‘new’ start and the continuation of my regular life days in sequence- which are sometimes very special. May we all find our best. Love, Ann

Crabby Amigos

So it’s friday the men are on a fishing trip at the beach so there is a little more time for getting Ready for Saturday’s big event at the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival in N. Wilkesboro, NC. Where is that you ask? Literally in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  While fall has not quite arrived here – mornings are crisp at around 64 degrees, the days are high 70s to 80s. It is a great time of year for an event like this !

I also found out yesterday that pretty soon I will need to decide on a ‘new name’ for myself – kinda like mom, mommy or mother – but a little grander…. more on that another day.

Because of all this excitement, I didn’t manage to get to bed until 11:30 – late pour moi… and so I painted these three little men.  LIke a lot of things that i do, i hated it for the first 15 minutes. What was I thinking ? Green on Orange and the shapes were way off… but this morning, I ADORE them.

I hope your weekend is as wonderful as I believe mine will be – looking forward to exhibiting.

Beach Life

I just can’t get the sea off my mind – when I was young we went to Maine a lot . Recently a couple of my college buddies did a mini tour of New England (maybe more like New England Pubs) and posted pictures of the coast in RI – I couldn’t go due to kids activities – but I did manage to squeeze in a painting – (and a couple of cocktails) so I was almost there.
