The birth of the Whimsical Love Story Map

Really, the last time I posted was July 4th ? it’s October.

So WHAT AM I working on ? Whimsical, Romantic, Sweet little love story Maps.

Earlier in the summer, I was hired by Ben through CustomMade, to create the perfect little love-story map for his bride Rebecca as a wedding gift. Totally his idea.
He was so great to work with – you could actually feel the love for his lady, in the emails he send to me about their short life together thus far – all the things and places that they have shared to date (and I am certain which will become many, many more).

Finished Work

Off went the art piece. Earlier this fall, I heard from a wedding guest that Ben showed the framed work at their wedding. I am humbled to have been a tiny part of such a great beginning !

I want to share the amazing process with you all – for inspiration –

The couple shares space – whether it is all over the US like Ben & Rebecca or just in a single town. As long as there are things to say, places they hang out together – an apple farm, an airport, a shopping mall – it makes no difference how close or how far – it can become their romantic, original watercolor painting, their Whimsical Love Story Map !

The couple or a friend of the couple, shares their story with me. They provide a list of places and perhaps sentiments or quotes and then ideas for icons – one of Ben’s was his home town of Buffalo – so we had a Bills helmet, the falls, snowflakes and the city hall building to work with. This would have been fine if it all occurred just in New York State too – this process is easily adapted to a small area.

Ben provided little snippets of their relationship – where they met, the first ‘I love you’, the popping of the question and all the things in between that led up to the wedding. You can provide details or I can ask for feed back.

Once this list is accomplished, we begin the map. I send little sketches of the areas, you provide feedback. I adjust, we agree and they are then placed permanently on the map! The map is hand painted with Peerless Water colors , cured and sent to you matted and ready for you to frame. It really is that easy.

I hope that you consider doing this for your next wedding gift – it is a heartfelt, original way to express your love for the happy couple.

All inquiries answered promptly. Estimate depends upon number of drawings. Pricing begins at $ 75.00 it generally takes a minimum of three weeks to complete the work.

– Hope you enjoyed this brief snip-it into the art of Whimsyville.

Where the H#$% have you been?

Um working. Working on Art, Working at home, Working at driving to and from RRHS for Soccer Girl and Lax Man; Running a soccer tournament…I really could not tell you, it was all a whirl wind as this time of year often is.  Now, I am resting and thinking about what I will dive into next …

Left Chihuahua

As I write this blog post, somewhere in the ‘art studio renovation’ there is an entire box of these things – they are mostly magnets at this point and every single one is different. This is a pair of chihuahua earrings made for a special mom for Mothers Day. They are my sanity –

Below are some more. When I finished these, in-between all of the other activities noted above, I was amazed by the quantity that I had completed and the fact that I did not remember doing most of them! Not sure what will happen next with them – but they will definitely appear at Whimsical Women in November.

So that is where I have been.  now if I could only remember where I put the car keys. ha. ha. ha.

These LIttle Piggies –
can you spot the ‘thumb’ and the ‘pinky’ ?

So ……. here is the latest watercolor and ink work – not overly complicated but lots of fun and very colorful.  Inspired by the incipit cold / hot / cold / freezing weather – there is actually a pretty big collection of these now.  You would have thought that “birds” would have been the first, given my commitment to myself to finish a collection, but you can guess that the need for color invaded the plans.

They are going to Whimsical Women in Chapel Hill in May – so either I see you there and you can pick one up or for those of you who live far, far away – the US Mail can bring one to you.

Lots of love – and happy weekend – Ann

Sweethearts…

It’s that time of year when publicly, you exclaim your love by purchasing cards, gifts , flowers or a lovely dinner for your sweetheart.

Um No. I am fortunate – I have had the same valentine for 20 years yet it seems like just yesterday we were married. To celebrate Valentines day there is always a small piece of art. They sit on the mantle and then get stashed away with the others sometime in March or eventually become overshadowed by Senior Pictures or birthday cards. Yet there in the drawer of the armoire, are 19 pieces of my heART- a testament to the love that still feels new.

The refreshing odor of freshly cut lumber and art space restrictions

Karl the Contractor is busy in the basement adding a bathroom on the same floor as the studio – (there goes my art exercise – that is running upstairs to use the bathroom) and, god forbid,  a ‘kitchen’ . It seems to me that this space is becoming a ‘man cave’ – complete with spear throwing range and beer refrigerator and I saw a HUGE tv (nobody needs a tv this size its more like a score board) peeking out from between the bikes stored in the basement.

This ‘space’ was claimed 13 years ago by me – the painter and my husband – the wood worker. Tons of painting, two books and several hundred experiments have occurred on the ‘art’ side. The woodworking side remains a pile of things that need to be repaired and or replaced with the exception of the infamous ‘eagle project’  which was done mostly in the middle of the driveway, not in the wood working shop.

There are of course no ‘cars’ in the two car garage. There are kayaks, camping equipment, a really big lawnmower (but some dude cuts our grass?), boxes of things from DH’s ‘side of the family’ – I just stay out of those all together…

So for the next few months, I will be resigned to sitting in my ‘upstairs art space – a chair with nine cubby holes placed next to it- holding markers, pencils and various art books – for creating ‘new works’.

Here was last nights finished PetWork – his name is Raleigh. He is just about the happiest dog I have ever seen. I am sure it will make his owner smile.

I also delivered the black lab PetWork yesterday and the collector that purchased it told me she cried when she saw it. I have mixed emotions about a sad reaction to my art – you know my tag line is , “happy art for happy people”….  but it was a memorial picture – the doggy had passed away two months ago.

So heres to a the smell of freshly cut lumber, the on-going he wants / she wants space discussion and more happy art collectors . Have an awesome weekend .

The month of Gratefulness….

I am a haphazard blogger – and honestly, I wish I had enough important thoughts to blog daily – this month is whizzing by and in a very, very short time we will be sitting down to that huge family gathering to remind ourselves of what is important – family and friends.

One of the things that I am most grateful for is creativity. Some think is just pure luck of the draw,  some believe it to be genetic, others the result of concentrated efforts and practice – but however it has arrived – every year I am more thankful for this ability to think, grow and create. I am also secretly hoping that this single reflection has me covered for all 30 days of the unforgiving daily gratefulness requirement that each November presents to us – because my haphazard blogging techniques are certainly not in line with that task.

The other cool thing about november is Whimsical Women. If you are in or near Winston Salem, NC you MUST run to this event. It is truly amazing. I have been painting up a storm – a snow storm – so here are the 2013 “Men of Snow”.  Simple, colorful & happy. For those of you that I have known for a long time, this is an annual painting event – and they are different each year – this one is just simple (which my “one word” for 2013).

PS. In editing this I have determined that the Green Man of Snow is probably fro-magnum. Peace.
